Issued on May 15, 2024, in Yosemite National Park, California, this pane of 16 Forever stamps celebrates Ansel Adams (1902–1984), one of America’s most influential photographers. The stamps reproduce 16 of his celebrated black-and-white photographs: Half Dome, Merced River, Winter; Oak Tree, Sunset City; Thundercloud, Ellery Lake; Denali and Wonder Lake; The Golden Gate and Bridge from Baker Beach; Road and Fog; Rock and Grass, Moraine Lake; Leaves, Mount Rainier National Park; Monument Valley; Tetons and Snake River; Jeffrey Pine, Sentinel Dome; Mirror Lake, Mount Watkins, Spring; Maroon Bells; Aspens, Dawn, Autumn; Road After Rain; and Dunes, Oceano. These images exemplify Adams’s precise “straight photography” style, remarkable tonal range, and ability to convey the emotional power of the American landscape. USPS art director Derry Noyes designed the stamps using Adams’s existing photographs.
